Celebrating the Identity Crisis - Shoes & Spikes
The mixed media shoe pieces are a collection of ideas that have been in my head for years. All of the shoes are mine; lived, loved, and worn. Shoes defined who I was and how I connected with others. I knew I had a shared experience with others from the retied laces, the worn hole in the toe, or the shoe brand. For me, the shoes were always Converse All-Stars and VANS. These shoes also separated me from people I did not connect with or want to. I remember very clearly a day I wore a pair of flower print slip-on vans in the 8th grade and was confronted by two older students in the locker room; "Hey man, look at this guy. He's got flowers on his shoes. He must be a f***t."
If it made them uncomfortable, then I wasn't changing.
The shoes are mounted on repurposed plaques to celebrate that connection between like-minded people. The railroad spikes serve as a reminder of being anchored to your roots.
**The railroad spikes were collected on a hike near a defunct railroad track in FL.
